I’ve been meaning to post this, better late than never :)
As I shared in a previous post, in June I entered the Nike Women’s Half Marathon Random Draw and my name was not drawn. This was going to be my first half marathon, so I was a little disappointed. However, I kept my eye out for other opportunities to enter this great race. A few runners also shared with me that there might be a second chance draw.
Then on July 24th I was excited when I received an invitation to a second chance draw for people that did not get into the race. In order to qualify runners would have to complete the first two weeks of training which would begin on July 28th.
Unfortunately, during the first week of training I would be on a trip for my birthday, but I was very determined to qualify for this draw. Although, I was very happy to see that one of my rest days happened to fall on my birthday.
After successfully completing the first two weeks of training, I would know by August 15th during Week 3 of training, if my name was drawn. I think most runners that qualified for the second chance draw would agree that just like the initial draw, this was a very nerve wracking week!
Nike definitely built-up the suspense by waiting until the very last day to notify me.
Finally, on August 15th I received an e-mail with subject: “Congratulations, You’ve Earned Your Second Chance to Run SF!”
I was extremely happy to hear that I earned an entry into the race. I immediately registered to secure my spot. My next thought was, “Wow, I just committed to running a half marathon”.
Then I began making travel plans and have since been preparing for the race.
My training is going great! I’m currently in Week 6 and have ran a total of 97 miles. I’m proud that I haven’t missed any training days. Especially since each week is a little more challenging than the previous.
What has kept me going is looking back at how far I’ve come in the past month. Every week I am setting new personal records.
I ‘m excited to be one of 25,000 runners at my first half marathon on October 19th.
Now I can officially say…WE RUN SF!

I read this and thought, sign me up! I’m always looking for new fitness adventures. Well, this race was definitely an adventure.
Recently I participated in my first trail run. The event was called the Golden Gate Trail Run and it was held at Rodeo Beach in Sausalito, CA. The race was put on by Coastal Trail Runs. Over 600 runners registered for 5 miles, Half Marathon, 30 Km, Marathon or 50 Km.
Since this was my first trail run, not knowing what to expect, I signed up for the 5 mile run.
The views at the start were amazing as we were right next to the beach. It was a beautiful morning with surfers out in the water and dogs playing on the beach. We got to watch as the first few waves of runners headed up the trail and into the Marin Headlands.
Then they called for the 5 mile runners and we were off!
Although I knew that most of my race would be on dirt, I had no idea how much the elevation changes would affect my run.
Within the first mile I quickly realized that we were all more concerned about our footing than speed. My biggest regret was wearing regular running shoes. I highly recommend anyone who is new to trail running wear trail shoes to help prevent injury.
The first 2 miles or so it was a bit steep and rocky. This was the most challenging for me, since all my running is done on a flat surface with little to no elevation changes.
When I finally made it to the top, all my hard work was worth it! The view of Rodeo Beach was amazing and at a distance I could see the Golden Gate Bridge. The start was also in view and I was surprised at how far up I had traveled.
As I headed for the last half of my run, I noticed that the trail was less rocky which allowed me to run most of the way down.
The finish was near the start and the organizers provided fruit, salty snacks, assorted candy, water, Electrolyte sports drink and more. Runners got to choose between a green or black tech shirt and everyone received a finisher’s medal. Coastal Trail Runs did a great job organizing this race.
As a first time trail runner I noticed that at times the run felt more like a hike. The terrain and elevation changes also made it more challenging than typical runs. However, this is the reason I register for these races, for a new challenge and adventure.
The Coastal Trail Runs slogan is “Have fun out there!” and I can confirm that trail runs are a lot of fun. I look forward to my next trail run and more amazing views!

At the beginning of the year I finally incorporated running into my weekly workout routine. I‘d been dragging my heels for a long time since I don’t like running on treadmills and the few times that I ran outside for my workout, I realized that it was different from simply jumping on a cardio machine. When running outside I had to keep in mind the weather and I could only take a few things with me.
Well I bought all my running gear and started heading out on runs. The first few weeks were a bit challenging, but I began seeing an improvement in my endurance level. I now run a few times per week and average 6 miles per run. RunKeeper has become my favorite App to track my runs. The App allows me to look back and see how I’ve improved.
A few months ago I volunteered at a Marathon and got the opportunity to award medals at the finish line. I’ve received a few finisher’s medals myself from shorter races, but I would have to say that congratulating runners at the finish and placing medals on them was an incredibly rewarding experience. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was very inspiring to see runners of all levels accomplishing person fitness goals.
While volunteering I met one of the Pace Leaders and they planted a seed in my head. They encouraged me to train for a marathon. I’ve entered several 5K and mud runs, but no long distance runs. While I feel a marathon would require a lot more training, since I’m now running regularly, I’ve decided to enter my first half marathon this fall.
After making this a personal fitness goal, the first run that came to mind was the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco. Last year I heard many great things about this race, which made me even more excited to register for my first half marathon.
I went on the event website and after reading the registration information, I quickly realized that my only chance of running would be through a random draw that opened on the following day.
I joined thousands of runners and entered the Nike Women’s Half Marathon Random Draw. Knowing that notifications would be sent by June 27th, like many others I anxiously checked my e-mail account for a Nike e-mail and credit card for a Nike charge. I think this is the only charge that I’ve ever looked forward to receiving.
Then finally on June 26th I received my long-awaited Nike e-mail, I rushed to open it and it basically read “unfortunately your entry was not accepted”. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed, I really wanted this to be my first half marathon. However, as with any draw, I realize that there is no guarantee.
Although my name was not drawn, the Nike Women’s Half Marathon is an amazing event that I still want to be a part of this year. For this reason, I plan on volunteering the day of the race.
My goal is still to enter my first half marathon this fall and I’m looking forward to a new PR….Personal Record for non-runners :)
